PhD scholarship on unemployment activation
Employment Activation in Australia: PhD Scholarship at the University of Newcastle
Closing date: 6 February 2015 (however, early submission is encouraged).
Background: This PhD project will contribute to a 2015-2017 Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled ‘Employment Activation: The Changing Economy-Society Relation’. This Project investigates policy schemes and programmes operating in Australia that seek by various means to ‘activate’ the labour of the underemployed and unemployed. The project seeks to assess the role such schemes play in the reconfiguration of labour and in reworking the economy-society relation.
PhD project description: The designated PhD project will focus on one specific employment activation scheme operating in the contemporary Australian context (e.g ‘Work for the Dole’). The project will involve careful mapping of the emergence of the scheme, its historical precedents and crucially an empirical investigation of how this scheme ‘activates’ labour. The successful applicant will be working in collaboration with the CI Professor Lisa Adkins, who is BHP Billiton Chair of Sociology at the University of Newcastle and an Academy of Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro).
